Château Café (Coffee) Malt - Castle Malting 1LB
Castle Malting Château Café malt is a specialty roasted malt crafted from Belgian two-row barley, designed to impart bold coffee-like character and deep colour in beer. Its wort colour ranges between 420–520 EBC (≈158–196 Lovibond), delivering pronounced roast and depth.
This malt undergoes a mild kilning phase followed by a high-temperature roast up to 220 °C, creating a distinct nutty, espresso-like aroma and flavour. In dark ales, it also adds a velvety mouthfeel and reinforces beer hue.
Brewing applications:
Ideal for stout, porter, dark Belgian ales, Scottish ales, and even brown ales (used sparingly up to 10% of the grist), where it delivers fresh-raised coffee aroma and roasted complexity.
Usage Recommendations:
Use at up to 10% of total malt bill for a noticeable coffee note.
Combine with highly modified base malts (e.g., Pilsen or 2‑Row) to ensure full starch conversion, as Château Café has low enzymatic activity.
For richer dark beers, pair with chocolate or black malt to deepen roast complexity.
Benefits:
Strong coffee aroma with nutty undertones
Smooth, full mouthfeel and body
Rich dark hue for visually compelling beers
Recommended beer styles:
Stouts & Porters: Enhances roast and coffee complexity
Dark Belgian/Scottish Ales: Adds depth and roasted nuance
Brown Ales (small amounts): Offers gentle coffee accents
